Party at the Palms Championship Winners Print E-mail
Tuesday, 30 June 2009

The much-anticipated championship party and tournament for the Party at the Palms promotion has concluded...The suites at the Palms were simply fantastic, and we can safely say we've never seen a poker tournament atmosphere quite like it.  The championship event consisted of 2 rounds, including a single-table format as well as a multi-table format to decide the 21 big winners.  The 2 rounds gave players an opportunity to have 2 chances to win.  In addition to the feature tournaments, an additional $1500 in cash and prizes were awarded for winners of various games, including the "Big Ern" Bowling Challenge, which was won by Doug Magee.  Continue reading for the list of winners.

We got off to a later start then anticipated, we were suppose to be in the room at 4:00pm, but did not actually get into our suites until 4:30.  The reason why was Hugh Hefner had rented out the whole floor the night before and had a private pajama party Saturday night.  Since the Palms is very tied in with Playboy they can't just kick Mr. Hefner out at checkout time, but to think just 12 hours before we got in there were Playboy models and the man himself in our rooms partying it up!

As mentioned before we changed the format up a bit for all the qualifiers to give the players two opportunities to win.  We would hate for someone to come all the way out to Las Vegas and take a bad beat.  All the players randomly drew for their seats and played a single table sit-n-go where the top three players at each table would win a $1,500 package.  If they were unfortunate to not make it the first time, we had a second tournament with all the players that didn't qualify played off in a four table regular style tournament.  The top three in that tournament would also win a $1,500 package to give us our 21 winners.

For the very first time in league history we have a two time grand prize winner!  Doug Magee who is the on a roll in the Free Poker Network, had just won one of the cruise packages in the Ship It promotion.  While onboard the ship he won the $10,000 Highroller package as well, and now won one of the $1,500 packages in the Party at the Palms promotion.

One of Doug's shipmates has also become a two time grand prize winner!  Skip Wood won himself a $1,500 package in the Party at the Palms promotion as well to go along with the $3,500 cruise package in the Ship It promotion.  Way to go Doug & Skip! (Skip is on the left with Doug on the right)

While the last chance tournament was going on we had some extra prizes that everyone was playing for throughout the night.  We had a Las Vegas trivia game which was won by Jeff and Vonda Gab for a cool $100.  Everyone also received two cards in an envelope for our swingers card swap game.  They could trade cards with anyone that had the same deck as them.  We had a total of six different decks and at the end of the night put out the flop, turn, and river.  We gave away $50 for each winner with the best poker hand.

We also drew 6 names for the chip stacking challenge.  The eventual winner from the judges was Scott Eckert winning $100, who if you see at poker nights generally has a lot of chips in front of him, so this game was right up his alley.  We then drew six names out to take on the pro's heads up for $100.  "Pro" Brook Lyter took on Leslie Jahner, with Brook ending up winning in a back-in-forth game.  "Pro" Pete Bushey took on Lance Harris with Lance coming out the winner.  "Pro" Steve Pris played against Derek Willaims with Derek getting the best of him.  "Pro" Scott Eckert took on Amanda Frye with Amanda getting the best of Scott.

In our guess the amount of chips in the jar game, we put all kinds of different chips in a clear jar and everyone at the party could take a guess at how much the value was inside the jar.  There were 25's all the way up to 5000 chips inside.  Nobody in the room knew the answer until we counted them up and the winner won $100.

And then in our biggest game "The Big Ern Challenge" we had going on throughout the night everyone could bowl 3 frames of bowling with the top five players advancing to the finals.  If at any point someone bowled a turkey they would win $50 cash on the spot.  Then just like in bowling league players received cards for doing well.  If they got a strike they would earn 3 cards, 2 cards for a spare, and one card if they got a total of 9.

The Big Ern Challenge was a sweep by non other then the guy who is winning everything right now, Doug Magee.  He got a turkey for $50, won the high hand for $100, and won the Big Ern Challenge for another $100 for a total of $250!

By the time this was all getting wrapped up we had our last three winners in the Last Chance tournament for the remaining $1,500 packages.

"Last Chance" Tournament winners:
Jeri Schmidt - Pheasant Cafe - Mott, ND
Dale Hjelmgren - Outer Limits - New Richmond, WI
Roy Winkelman - Litchfield VFW, Litchfield, MN

Note: WSOP event #54 (the final $1,500 NL Holdem event) sold out just minutes before we could get our group of winners registered to play.  Unfortunately due to WSOP policy there was no way to block off or hold seats in advance.  Despite pleas with WSOP upper management, we could not arrange an exception.  Therefore, our Party at the Palms winners had a choice to play in a future WSOP event, upgrade to a HPT Red Rock main event package ($2k value), or simply take the cash ($1,500).

Is very disappointed that we did not have are tourny at the Palms one day
earlier, so all of us could have played in the WSOP...

avatar Agreed, having the tourney a day earlier would have been ideal, but please note
the suites were not available, Hugh Hefner had the entire floor reserved! We
had booked the suites months ahead in advance and while it was a possibility the
WSOP event would sell out, we felt it was a very unlikely given the history.
