Doug Magee Big Winner On Cruise Print E-mail
Monday, 20 April 2009

Doug Magee's run of good fortune continued in the Caribbean after his remarkable run in the South Dakota state championship.

Doug won the "Ship It!" single-table national championship for the coveted $10,000 "Highroller Poker Package", and also took down the opening tournament on the cruise for another $2,600.  His bid for the trifecta in the WPT $10,000 seat tournament fell short, however.  It was a great trip for Doug to say the least! The 7-day Caribbean cruise sailed out of New Orleans, so most of the Free Poker Network players and friends spent Saturday night on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.  The cruise made stops in Costa Maya-Mexico, Santo Tomas-Guatemala, Belize City-Belize, and Cozumel-Mexico.  The food was great, there was plenty of entertainment, and of course lots of poker action.  The poker room had cash games and tournaments, and the casino offered plenty of other action including a Blackjack tournament.

In the opening tournament on day 1 of the cruise, Doug Magee came out on top and Travis Tunink's buddy Mike took 2nd.

In the Ship It! championship, Jim Samuelson got off to a great start but lost momentum late when Doug Magee began to take over.  Nebraska winner Travis Tunink was the first player to bust when he was outdrawn by Lisa Hedstrom from Wilton, ND, who rivered a bigger full house.  He used big-stack poker to crush the remaining opponents when it was 4-handed.  Eventually it came down to Doug and Steve Montplaisir.  Doug had about a 2.5 to 1 chip lead and heads-up play did not last long.  Steve moved in when Doug raised preflop and was ahead with ace-high.  However, Doug's luck could not be denied as he promptly outflopped Steve with two live cards and that ended the match.

A good time was had by all who participated in the trip.  We'll be posting lots of pictures from the trip shortly.  Congrats again to Doug Magee from Tyndall, SD.
